6 Essentials to Check Before Booking a House Sitter

1. Check Their Experience

Look for sitters with real experience caring for homes and pets. It’s okay to ask how many sits they’ve done, the types of animals they’re confident with, or whether they’ve dealt with things like alarm systems, medication, or nervous pets. Make sure they’re the right fit for your needs.

2. Read Their Reviews

If they’ve house-sat before, check what past homeowners have said about them. A sitter with multiple 5-star reviews is a great sign!

3. Ask for References

If they don’t have reviews yet, ask for references from past house sits, pet care jobs, or even character references from employers or landlords.

4. Verify DBS & Insurance

A DBS (criminal record check) and pet/home sitting insurance aren’t essential—but they do show an extra layer of professionalism and trustworthiness.

5. Have a Video Call or Meet in Person

A quick video chat can help you get a feel for the person behind the profile. It’s a chance to ask question and discuss details.

6. Trust Your Gut

If something feels off, keep looking! A good sitter should make you feel confident and reassured.

Prepare Your Home for a Smooth Sit

Once you’ve chosen your sitter, set them up for success with a few simple steps:

  • Write down routines, emergency contacts, and key information

  • Show them around your home (in person or via video)

  • Leave clear instructions for pet care, appliances, bins, Wi-Fi, etc.

  • Let them know how often you’d like updates while you’re away

  • Make sure they know where things are—cleaning supplies, food, leads, litter, etc.
